Attempts at Art

I have very much enjoyed painting over the past few months, and although there are quite a few pieces that I think are horrible, there are a couple that I’m rather proud of. I’ve never taken any painting or art courses in my life, but figured I was probably artistic enough when it comes to quilting and scrapbooking that I couldn’t possibly be that terrible at painting. Sometimes I was right, and sometimes I was wrong.

This was the first painting that I was incredibly proud of. Mostly because it was only my third try at painting and the first two tries were so bad I won’t even explain what I tried to paint.

The next piece took me just over seven hours to paint, even though there are only three colours. It was all of the words that made it so difficult. I had to use the smallest paintbrush I could find.

And finally, a piece that I am just under halfway complete. This one is of course based on one of mine and Pete’s favorite video games – Zelda. There is still a lot of work to do on this one, but it is the largest piece I’ve worked on yet so it seems to also be taking me the longest. I’ve probably put around 8 hours into it so far.

In the meantime, I actually have to put my paintbrushes aside for a while what with how busy work and family and friends and general life is. I also have a lot of quilting to do in the next few weeks which will keep me away from painting for a while.

Cheers, and enjoy this smoky campfire weather we’re having right now.

Of Adorable Boys

I had the pleasure of becoming an Auntie again on June 3rd, when my older sister gave birth to a second beautiful boy. Daniel James was welcomed into the ever-growing family of ours and I got to see him just a few weeks after his arrival.

I can’t possibly forget about my other nephew, Jacob. He’s grown incredibly big, and is even talking now! This child was an absolute riot to play with. He acted so shy and sleepy when we first got there, but after he ate some lunch he was full of energy.

So Jacob kept trying to play with my camera, so I had to hold it pretty far away to get a self picture of the two of us, which just turned into an adorable picture of him. Ever camera-happy that little boy is!

I have to end this post with a picture of the somewhat less adorable than Jacob and Daniel boy, which is a boy whom I miss very much. This was how he looked the last time I saw him. Though if you’ve been following his adventures, he is apparently quite a bit more lobster-looking than in this photo.

Okay, Jacob and Daniel are far more adorable. But I adore Marc none-the-less.

Catching Up and A Story

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but mainly because my site has been down and not actually because I’ve been lazy. However, I have been incredibly busy this summer.

It seems like I’m always trying to catch up on things. Catching up on work after being away on conferences, catching up on family and friends after not seeing them for a while, catching up on work around the house, catching up on blogging. I always seem to be trying to catch up on everything, but every time I finish something I seem to need to catch up on five other things in the meantime. Alas, I shall catch up here with a story from a little while ago.

Pete and I, along with a group of our friends to celebrate a birthday and a return from a long trip, went to a place called CoCo Di’s. It’s a wonderful Lebanese restaurant downtown with delicious food and tasty Shisha.

It was a pretty cool experience, as I had never actually tried a Shisha (or Hookah) pipe before.

Pete/Me

It was my turn to try the strawberry flavour! We also tried grape, peach, and apple. I can’t really say which one was my favorite as I liked them all!

It was a first for both Pete and I, and I figured that I looked hippie enough that day to be smoking a water pipe so why the heck not. The food was delicious, the Shisha was tasty, and the company was both hilarious and awesome. Being silly with a bunch of friends is some of the best times to be had.

The best part about this story, however, is what came afterward. At my soon-to-be sister in law’s bridal shower, a friend of my mom’s was flipping through all of these pictures on my camera. She asked me what I was smoking and I told her that it was a water-pipe that burns a molasses mixed with some tobacco. As I was about to explain how it works, she laughed and said she knew exactly what a Hookah was, and that she used to smoke them with Hashish back in the 60′s. She then looks over to my mom to make sure she wasn’t paying attention. It made me laugh, since I would have never pegged her for the type of person to have done that in her younger days.

I hope I surprise young people when I’m old with the ridiculous things that I sometimes do right now.

Growing Up

Sometimes it kinda sucks when you realize that you’re growing up. But sometimes it’s also kind of awesome. So Pete and I got the new place (of course with the help of family) and we spent the first week of possession doing work. Cleaning, prepping, painting, cleaning, moving, cleaning.

So, as I kind of thought was fitting, we had our very first meal sitting on the floor of the living room before we even starting painting the main floor.

Dinner

The two of us are both incredibly sick of working on the place, but at the same time it was really fun doing (some) of the work. Like painting. I love painting. You have to make it a game, otherwise it’s no fun at all. Pete and I picked the bedroom colours and his sister and I picked the living room colours.

A lot of work is still needed to be done on the place, like more painting, putting in some shelving, unpacking… sometimes it feels like it’ll never end. Luckily I have an awesome Dad who’s always willing to help us out.

In the meantime, this is our view from our living room, which is super nice.

Even though I feel kind of old, tired, and worn out after all that work, I’m still a kid. Pete is too. We have a shelf dedicated solely to our Star Wars Lego. We have a map of Middle Earth hanging up. We have a replica Lightsaber displayed on top of our bookshelf. We have chocolate milk in our fridge and we are incredibly silly. Besides, people should never forget how to be kid. Being a kid is some of the best fun.

I didn’t think I would EVER have a story like this. I’ll have to press the rewind button here…

Last Week

My friend, Jenn, and I are leaving another Yoga class. On the ride home, as always, we talk nerdy stuff, random stuff, and we make fun of the skinny girls who don’t have boobs that get in their way during yoga. They also seem to all wear lululemon pants. Not that they are bad people or dumb girls or anything. It’s just mine and Jenn’s quiet way of being happy in the fact that we don’t need lululemon pants to be able to do yoga. I have always seen lululemon as overrated and a waste of money. Oh how I would soon learn how wrong I was.

Fast forward to a few days ago. Pete’s sister is telling me about how lululemon has some new headbands that are pretty cool, and actually work really well. I like headbands. I don’t like lululemon. Pete’s sis loves lululemon.

Fast forward again to yesterday. Yesterday, I fell. Pete and I are at Kingsway mall doing a bit of shopping on a day off together, and I figure “What the hell, I’ll go see these headbands Pete’s sis told me about”. I leave Pete in the EB games and I go into the dreadful pit of darkness and doom. It was cringeworthy: Loads of high-pitched little girls trying to look “sexy” in work-out clothes. Teenagers whose dad’s probably give them far too much money. Girls my own age who are a third of my size being all “buddhist” and “in-style” and stuff. I feel like a lone wolf. The girl who isn’t skinny. I have boobs. I have a big bum. And there is probably no way I could ever fit into those expensive pants. What do I for some reason do? TRY SOME ON. Not only did they fit, oh no, but they were so comfortable, I just kind of groaned in disgust and in pleasure. I gave in to the Dark Side.

These pants were probably the comfiest “sweat” pants that I have ever worn. Soft, warm, comfy. I immediately knew I was about to spend the most money I have ever spent on sweat pants.

I left and wandered to the EB Games where I found Pete waiting for me just outside. He raised an eyebrow and chuckled at the lululemon bag I was shamefully carrying.

Last night: Pete and I are on our way to see Jenn and Lee. I know I will have to admit defeat. I know I will have to admit that I have fallen to the Dark Side. I tell Jenn. She groans, she laughs, and she probably enjoyed a few moments of joy at my massive /fail.

I have fallen. I know it. It’s really comfy though. Seriously… you should try it.

“Join the Dark Side – Now Featuring Comfy Pants!”

Cheers,

T.
